Hair Loss Treatment Basics

hairloss
There are several different forms of hair loss (alopecia), having different causes, with hereditary baldness being the most common form and heredity the most common reason why men and women lose their hair. This hair disease is characteristic for its horseshoe balding pattern in men while female hereditary baldness is less easily recognizable and more diffuse and so it is spread around the entire scalp. Alopecia areata also known as spot baldness happens to be the second most common type of hair loss and it also affects children. This unpredictable hair condition is extremely difficult to handle. Alopecia areata can disappear without any treatment but it can also reappear in different spot or spread to the entire scalp or entire body so that the patient loses all body hair and then we speak of alopecia totalis.

Although it is relatively difficult to treat hereditary hair loss successfully, it is practically impossible to cure alopecia areata. One common treatment that can be used with some degree of success for treating both of these hair conditions exists. Its chemical name is minoxidil. The hair loss product that introduced minoxidil is called Rogaine or Regaine in Europe and it got approved by the FDA for treating hair loss in male and later also in female patients as the first ever FDA approved hair regrowth treatment. Minoxidil is applied topically to the scalp twice a day and it acts by promoting hair re-growth rather than by protecting the existing hair follicles from further miniaturization. It comes in three different forms – liquid, cream or foam and in various concentrations from 2% to experimental 20% and a number of generic varieties exist to suit the needs of every patient.

The real breakthrough in the way we treat hereditary baldness came in late 1990s with the discovery of its true cause. It was observed that male patients with benign prostatic enlargement who were given finasteride (Proscar) started growing thicker and healthier hair in their crown area. As a result the first hair loss pill Propecia received approval from the FDA for treating male pattern baldness. These days millions of balding men buy finasteride 1mg online and use it once daily in order to maintain and even regrow their hair and this pill has become a synonym for hair loss cure. It acts by protecting susceptible hair follicles from damaging attacks of dihydrotestosterone. Dihydrotestosterone is a natural metabolite of the male hormone testosterone which attacks and destroys cells in male prostates and in hair follicles. Not all hair follicles in the commonly affected areas of the scalp are susceptible to such attacks though. This susceptibility is determined by heredity and is, therefore, individual. Female bodies also make dihydrotestosterone and they also have hair follicles susceptible to such attacks but unfortunately they cannot use Propecia as it could cause damage to the male fetus if they became pregnant.
